Photography tips: Guidelines for taking pictures of lighted lamps
The objects that glow or emit light, such as lamps can be unique photo subjects along with posing serious complications for the photographer since camera faces the light directly.

However by following some tips and guidelines, one can take reasonable photographs of luminous subjects since auto-focus do not work in such a situation.

It is advisable that the camera should be set a very small aperture and long exposure for which a firm support is required so that camera does not shake to blur the image. So, use of a tripod stand and a remote or timer-set release should be preferable. The inset picture was taken with such a setting at the Jaipur Literature Festival-2016 where a lighted lamp was hung on a tree.

It you are using a digital camera and trying to compose the picture with a background of foreground, set flash at about half of the exposure that a regular flash picture would need or set it to match the camera's aperture, but double the ISO setting to get a reasonable composition.

If one is using a tripod, one may try the camera setting of ISO at 100, Aperture at F14 or more and shutter speed of 200th of a second in sync flash. Try a few settings around the one suggested to get the best results.

The settings need to change with the foregoing as the reference setting depending on the situation.  It the camera permits, try bouncing the quick camera flash behind the lighted subject to get a better composition.
