Heart rending murder of Gurugram school child: What is the solution?
Safety in schools is the 'least thing' which any school or any establishment is duty-bound to provide. Even when everything is evident, the death has occurred on Gurugram school premises due to fatal injury; the school cannot shy away from the responsibility.

"Where are our schools are heading to? Government schools with qualified teachers are becoming dysfunctional due to teacher absenteeism and non-performance and private schools thriving through forced terrorising presence of teachers and strict administers emphasising school routines and formalities. There is a sheer criminal neglect of children. Private schools look soulless places that are enforcing a culture of silence through strict discipline by frequently hurting the esteem of children and parents alike. Private schools are mere soulless straightjacketed, cosmetic and glamorous honeytraps," said a senior citizen in a Jaipur park while reacting to recent incidents of rapes, murders and fatal injuries in private schools of big cities of India.

Unfortunately, the police, politicians, and corporate seem to be siding the money and muscle power of private school owners. When the pressure of parents and community mounts, all of them cleverly get into lip-service and double talk exercises to mislead parents and provide an escape route to the school, said another senior citizen.

Schools are for children and not the other way round. Death of a child due to an accident on school premises; murder, rape of a child; suicide by a child due to fatal injury to his or her self-esteem; violation of childrens' rights including right to live and receive quality education are criminal neglects by the erring schools. Such schools are death traps for children, commented another discussant.

However, one of the discussant senior citizens suggested that we need to have a mechanism for creating an equal stake in school that of the parents, neighbourhood community, eminent educationists, school management members, teachers and child rights organizations for the safety, care and studies of children. Periodic reviews and corrections should be carried out to provide and maintain safe and fear-free learning environment to children which is basic condition for learning to happen in schools.

The basic thing is to restore the safety and sociological foundation of schools through a quarterly social audit of schools with a follow-up, I feel.
